Leesport, Pa. | September 10, 2016 - Bower & Branch, Trees for Life, a group of growers and 53 independent garden centers in the northeast and Midwest, announced today that Tom Hilgeman will join the organization as Director of Retail Member Onboarding and Engagement.
Hilgeman comes to Bower & Branch from White Oak Gardens in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he's spent the past 20 years, starting out as a summer intern, moving up to store manager and, since 2008, serving as general manager of the midsize independent garden center. During his time with White Oak, Hilgeman led the effort to refresh the group's website, social and e-commerce presence.
"The green industry as a whole tends to shy away from technology," says Jeff Webeler, president of White Oak Gardens. "We relate to being outside and getting our hands dirty and plants can be an escape from the breakneck speed of things. But Tom has always managed to embrace both.
"He understands that we need to bridge the gap for people who are extremely comfortable with technology and to help them reconnect with plants online and in person. Tom is the person to bring this to the forefront in our industry and Bower & Branch is creating a new path for IGCs," Webeler adds
As a member of the AmericanHort SHIFT project, the Ohio Nursery & Landscape Association retail committee and recently, the Retail Committee chairperson and member of the ONLA Board of Directors, Hilgeman has played an integral part in the green industry.
"Tom has always seen the big picture and how to turn it into something unique and sustainable as an independent retailer," says Sid Raisch, president and CEO of Bower & Branch. "We see him doing that on a larger scale for Bower & Branch, helping other IGCs embrace the change they need to stay relevant and thrive."
Hilgeman will continue to reside in Cincinnati, Ohio, with his wife and three sons. He will also spend a period of time with White Oak Gardens prior to his move to Bower & Branch to ensure a smooth transition for the team.
