The poll position
We vote “Yea!” on this idea: All-America Selections has opened the polling for the 2010 American Garden Award to include the public’s vote. Four plants are up for the award (pictured here, L to R): Echinacea ‘Purple Splendor’, ornamental pepper ‘Purple Flash’, Rudbeckia ‘Denver Daisy’ and Zinnia Profusion ‘Knee-High Red’. Voting ends on Aug. 31.
We vote “Yea-squared!” on this idea: You could hold a straw poll of your own – and probably sell lots of plants – by showing your customers the candidates in a “Vote Here!” display. If they want to vote “for real,” tell them to go to www.americangardenaward.com.

Product-ivity
From the “Wow, that’s a cool product!” file, we offer Deeco Consumer Products’ Art-Deck-Oh! line of furniture. This innovative interlocking design allows four deck chairs and one table to be stacked together to create a uniquely creative, space-saving unit. Check it out at www.deecocp.com.

“My Vegas connection says never leave a hot machine. And face it ... running a garden center is just like gambling – except you can go home at night instead of listening to a bunch of Elvis impersonators.”
– Robert Hendrickson, managing director of The Garden Center Group

In the March issue, we reported on a rain-soaked Sugar Creek Garden Center, the startup independent retail store in Fort Mill, S.C., that was battling mud issues during construction. Here’s the latest report from Jan Wallace, who, along with husband George, opened the store’s doors four months ago (Spoiler alert: The news is much more cheery):
