Valley View, Ohio – The editorial and design team of Garden Center magazine, a B-2-B publication serving the independent garden center industry, received accolades from a handful of organizations that recognize publications for their work.
The American Society of Business Press Editors (ASBPE), the professional association for full-time and freelance editors, writers, art directors, and designers employed in the business, trade, and specialty press, presented Garden Center magazine with three awards for 2016. Designer Stephanie Antal won gold in the Infographics category, both nationwide and also within the Heartland region, which is comprised of Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia. She won silver for Best Typographic Cover for her work on the November 2015 State of the Industry Report. Editor Michelle Simakis won a regional silver award for “What we do matters,” her profile of Julie Kouhia, CEO of Molbak’s Garden + Home in Woodinville, Wash.
Antal and Simakis also won All Ohio Excellence in Journalism awards from The Press Club of Cleveland, which recognizes both consumer and trade publications across the state. Antal received second place in the Covers: Trade & Professional Publications for her August 2015 State of the Edibles cover. Simakis won first place in the Features: Trends category for the July 2015 cover story, “Bone dry & beautiful: California garden centers are defying dry ground and showing customers how to create stunning, water-wise gardens.” She also won first in the Features: Personality Profiles category for “What we do matters.”
