Not Your Father’s Composter

Here's the latest wave of eco-riffic products you need to check out.

Now that being green is just so-darned keen, discerning customers are leaning on savvy retailers to help them find “all the rage” items that will not only enhance their homes and lawns – but pay homage to Ma Earth, all the while. These sophisticated shoppers don’t just pay lip service to eco-healthy options, though; they seek real solutions. And if the answers are clever, to boot – like the five products featured here – well, that’s just another way for you to enhance your status as their favorite gardening resource.

What is it? The 2-in-1 Rainsaver from Tierra-Derco International. Why should you sell it? The stylish contemporary design looks like a planter, but this is actually a 79-gallon rain saver. It is constructed from 100-percent recycled, grey, UV-resistant polypropylene (another “green” plus). Where to find it? (800) 992-1220; www.tierraderco.com
What is it? The Cascata Rain Barrel with Planter from Algreen Products. Why should you sell it? The Cascata holds 65 gallons of rain, which makes it a great “green” item in and of itself, but it also doubles as a plant container, so it is attractive anywhere you place it in the landscape. It features a corrosion-proof screen guard and a brass spigot. Where to find it? (519) 623-7810; www.algreenproducts.com
What is it? The Aquasaver gravity rainwater recovery system from DSD International. Why should you sell it? This has been one of the most-viewed items on the GC magazine Web site since it was posted several months ago. Translation: It’s white hot. This well-conceived, “ahead of the curve” invisible water-saving system uses gravity to route rainwater to an out-of-the-ground tank, such as a rain barrel (not included). Where to find it? (888) 334-8001; www.dsdinternational.net
What is it? The Worm Factory 360 composting system from Cascade Manufacturing Sales. Why should you sell it? This cleverly crafted “green machine” uses worms to recycle kitchen scraps into nutrient-rich compost for the garden. The Worm Factory 360’s stackable, multi-tray design makes it one of the more efficient ways to produce rich natural fertilizer for the garden. Where to find it? (360) 592-4285; www.cascadewormbin.com
What is it? The Earthmaker composter from Exaco Trading. Why should you sell it? Billed as “The King of Composters,” this aerobic composter reduces greenhouse gas emissions while using three chambers to produce up to 10 gallons of compost every month. It’s ideal for busy people who want an easy, green way to deal with organic waste. Where to find it? (877) 760-8500; www.exaco.com
