With the economy still throwing curveballs, you can’t afford to swing and miss at opportunities for sales. It’s a particularly formidable challenge with regard to big ticket items such as statuary and fountains. Industry folk we’ve quizzed generally let discretion trump valor in this area ... except when they market items that can be classified as either “different” or “just plain clever.” Here are some excellent examples of each:
| What is it? Dancing Spirit statue from Campania International. Why should you sell it? One new wave in statuary, particularly among Gen X shoppers, is an interest in items “spiritual” as opposed to “religious.” Dancing Spirit epitomizes the kind of statuary that seems to be getting a foothold, when some Old School items aren’t selling so well. | What is it? The Sculpture Family from Ceramo. Why should you sell it? The Sculpture Family, which is available in three sizes (23.25 inches, 17 inches and 8.75 inches), has a “wow, that’s cool” appeal that will set it apart in the landscape. Where to find it? | What is it? Aqua Bella Designs’ Stone Bowl fountain. Why should you sell it? This new fountain design is an ideal complement to the company’s compact Little Rain AquaBox. These smaller fountains are a great fit for nature lovers and water garden enthusiasts working with limited space. Where to find it? (800) 617-5565; www.aquabelladesigns.com | ![]() |
| What is it? Head planters from Designer Stone. Why should you sell it? This line is a garden “multi-tasker.” The statues, such as the President Barack Obama Head Planter pictured here, feature familiar images that double up as homes for plants. And, just in case your customers are right-leaning, there are many other Head Planter options available. Where to find it? (760) 788-2461; www.dsgardenshop.com | ![]() |
| What is it? Talavera garden and patio accents from Pottery Express. Why should you sell it? Like many items in the Pottery Express portfolio, this frog planter serves both a decorative and functional purpose. It not only is an attention grabber alone, but planted with the right flowers, it adds even more oomph to the garden. Where to find it? (877) 246-1673; www.potteryexpress.com | ![]() |
