This Massachusetts retailer finds a way to sell both the new and the 'tried and true'


At Harbor Garden Center in Salisbury, Mass., owner Tim Lamprey loves selling new stuff. He's pretty keen on "used," as well.

"We promote the appeal of an item being 'new,'" Lamprey said. "When Endless Summer hydrangea came out, promoting it as the 'new' big plant made for an easy sale."

Likewise,  something people are familiar with -- particularly something they've had success with -- can turn into a marketable item. "If you are selling a product, and you can tell a customer how well it has worked for other customers, the customer is likely to buy it," Lamprey said. "Bonide makes Mouse Magic, a mouse repellent. Many of our customers have tried it, and it has worked. It makes for an easy sale when people know it has worked for others."

So, whether it's new or used, the key to moving products is your ability to move the people in the store to buy the products. Yep, solid marketing is always a big Cha-ching!
