The "Garden Center Plus" model has become both fashionable and and profitable of late. But Mahoney's, with eight locations in New England, was WAY ahead of the curve. The Mahoney's Farm Stand was started in 1959, mainly to help founder Paul Mahoney find a way to pay for college.
Fast forward five decades plus, and the farm stand has done a lot more than that. Today's model offers area customers a broad selection of the best fresh local fruits and vegetables, as well as a variety of other specialty foods, such as fresh berry pies, cookies and brownies, jams and jellies, chicken and turkey pot pies, old fashioned sodas, frozen treats, real maple syrup, honey, biscuits and crackers, and the proverbial "more."
One of the keys to the farm stand's success -- well, aside from all those scrumptious goodies -- is the notion planted with customers that Mahoney's didn't stray far to find all those scrumptious goodies. No fewer than a dozen local suppliers have teamed with the garden center to deliver the fare at the farm stand, helping Mahoney's brand itself as a company that knows and appreciates its roots -- and that encourages guests to do likewise.
Good eats plus good business equals a lot of good benefits for the Mahoney team, not the least of which is the one known as "Cha-ching!"
