Hobby greenhouses would seem to have vast potential for the garden center. After all, a home house is a natural extension of what you're preaching at the store. Still, not a lot of retailers do well in this field.
One notable exception is Homewood Nursery & Garden Center in Raleigh, N.C. But then, Homewood is taking a proactive approach to marketing hobby houses. The garden center has partnered with National Greenhouse Co., a division of Nexus Corp., the premier manufacturer of residential, commercial and institutional greenhouses, to provide Homewood customers with the opportunity to purchase a residential greenhouse kit or upscale home greenhouse at a 5-percent discount from the manufacturer’s retail price.
Customers can click a link on the Homeood website and find all sorts of hobby options, and when they use the promotional code provided by the garden center, they can get the discount.
This promotion is great on so many levels. It certainly spurs interest in hobby greenhouses, and it shows that Homewood is genuinely interested in being a part of the process that helps the gardener purchase her own unit. This kind of cooperative arrangement pays dividends for all involved. Yea for Cha-ching!
