Some garden centers have a knack for thinking unconventionally. Chalet Nursery often creates a whole new convention. Take the St. Patrick's Day promotion the Wilmette, Ill., retail operation ran in its recent e-newsletter.
Yeah, we said, "St. Patrick's Day." Garden centers often beef up sales on holidays such as Christmas, Easter, Mother's Day and the entire autumn season, but Chalet is giving winter-weary customers reason to visit the store this month. Here's the promotion, straight from the e-letter:
A Hundred Thousand Welcomes
Celebrate St. Patrick's Day with the wearin' of the green and the hangin' of a real Irish legend. Our extraordinary handmade pieces, direct from Kinsale Co., Cork, Ireland, are inspired by ancient Celtic artefacts, myths and history. These crosses, statues and wall and door hangings are finished in pure bronze or cast iron. Irish or not, and even beyond St. Pat's, they make handsome gifts.
What a clever way to market (A) the holiday, (B) the store and (C) celebration in general -- all at a time when customers are itching to do something "spring-like" again. Think they'll think of Chalet as a great place to start the quest? That's a big "yes," and a big "Cha-ching!"
