Cha-ching! (4-13)

This Arizona retailer builds community goodwill by honoring senior citizens

In May, Watters Garden Center in Prescott, Ariz., is marking "Older Americans Month" by partnering with Home Instead Senior Care to honor seniors throughout the month.

In 1963 President John F. Kennedy designated May as Senior Citizens Month. President Jimmy Carter modified the name to “Older Americans Month” in 1980. Each year, a theme is selected by the U.S. Administration on Aging. This year’s theme is “Older Americans: Connecting the Community.” Watters and Home Instead are encouraging that connection by offering the opportunity to recognize the people who have made such great contributions to families, community and country.

“My heart goes out to the grandmotherly figures in our lives. I grew up with my grandmother,” said Ken Lain, owner of Watters Garden Center.  “She lived in the bedroom across from mine. She made a huge impact in my life.”

A unique section of Watters Garden Center has been handpicked to help local customers highlight those they may wish to honor, or those that mean something in the life of our community, especially those with military service.  “This special section at Watters is in full bloom, very pretty and extra easy to grow when left in the container," Lain said. "Anyone would love to receive this thoughtful gift (priced from $5 to $12).”

The garden center has set aside May 9-31 for the event. For those who would like to participate but don't personally know someone to honor, Home Instead Senior Care has arranged for plants to be donated to the Northern Arizona Home-based Veterans Program or to Prescott's local Meals on Wheels Program.

This innovative project has so much going for it from a goodwill standpoint that the "Cha-ching!" factor is only an ancillary part. But it is a part, nonetheless.
