Most garden centers are adjusting strategies as Baby Boomer customers pass the baton to Gen Xers. Anderson's Home & Garden Showplace in Newport News, Va., provides a worthy blueprint for the process.
Anderson's has added not one boutique, but two -- one for the brand-conscious, on-the-go younger mom and one for her offspring. At the former, the female shopper can find handbags, apparel and jewelry from the likes of Spartina449, Lindsay Phillips, Miche and Trollbeads. For the children, there's an array of kid-riffic stuff -- enough that when Mom says she's taking the family out plant shopping, the younger members of the family will make a suggestion as to where they should go.
That suggestion, almost invariably will be Anderson's Home & Garden Showplace. The result of that suggestion, likewise, will almost invariably be more "Cha-ching!" for the folks at the garden center.
