Charles Marder has spent his entire career perched a few feet “outside the box.” He was “green” long before green became everyone’s favorite color, introducing organics to the Bridgehampton, N.Y. region through his business, Marders Landscape Service and Garden Shop.
He was one of the first to in the country to use tree sophisticated spade technology in his landscape projects, each different from its predecessor. He and his staff have crafted not just a landscape service and garden center, but a retreat for customers who don’t just walk the grounds but “experience” them.
And he needs to get at least half the credit (with wife Kathleen, of course) for teaching son Silas that different is sometimes better. The younger Marder took a barn on his parents’ property and created The Silas Marder Gallery, a unique and popular art mecca that also hosts an outdoor film series featuring classic movies that regularly attract legions of film buffs to the Marder property in the evenings.
“There are things here that you won’t find anywhere else,” Charles Marder said. “In a world full of sameness, we are different.”
And, where "Cha-ching!" is concerned, different is usually better.
