Grocery stores and mass merchants have elevated impulse merchandising to an art form. Accessible displays and fixtures coupled with “must have” merchandise almost always result in add-on sales. Garden centers can nab impulse buys, too, by creating compelling displays at the point-of-sale.
At Bucks Country Gardens in Doylestown, Pa., the cash wrap is a destination unto itself. A large wooden arbor anchors the entire checkout space, and helps draw customers to this area. Both sides of the register are flanked by high-use hard goods at reasonable price points, spurring impulse sales.
Yep, this merchandising strategy has "Cha-ching!" written all over it.
