A rusted aluminum shed disguised with wisteria vines isn’t going to cut it for today’s homeowners. Consumers are looking to stash their stuff in a place with a little more style. Sheds that include windows, shutters, real shingles and other homelike elements are in demand.
“This has been the trend for awhile now,” said Darrin Gunnell, sheds product marketing manager for Lifetime Products. “The outdoors are becoming more important -- a sort of extension of the interior -- and people want the exterior of their home to look nice. We have found there is a balance between form and function, but form weighs heavily on the purchase decision.”
Homeowners ultimately choose a shed with a style similar to their home that will also blend with the yard. The structures Lifetime Products offers typically see more utilitarian use.
“Most people seem to be purchasing sheds as means for storage rather than work areas,” Gunnell said. “This is especially true for our shed line, as people who want ‘shops’ are building custom-sized sheds made from custom materials -- usually wood.”
Stylish sheds
There is definitely demand for these custom spaces. USA Today reported on this growing trend last fall. Fully appointed sheds and cabins are cropping up in more backyards these days. For many people, it’s a fun and affordable alternative to adding on to homes.
Costs for these structures vary widely. Some do-it-yourself kits range from $700 to $3,000. Having a shed custom-built by a contractor can easily cost up to $20,000.
Before construction starts, homeowners should check with the local building department. Structural requirements vary, and most municipalities will want to see a building plan before the shed goes up.
