The Netherlands Competition Authority (Nma) permitted a merger between Dutch auction houses Bloemenveiling Aalsmeer and FloraHolland. The auction members voted in favor of the merger Sept. 19. The auctions become one organization Jan. 1, 2008.
The merger is “essential for the preservation and strengthening of the position for growers and buyers/exporters within the international ornamental plant and flower industry,” according to a released statement from Bloemenveiling Aalsmeer.
The merger is expected to lower costs and create more standardization throughout the chain, and allow the combined organization to adapt to rapid changes in the world market.
The Nma determined the merger would not create a “position of economic power” and would allow for “enough real alternative channels both locally and abroad for growers and buyers.”
