Following a disagreement over a contract extension, the International Longshoremen Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) continue negotiations to avoid work stoppage along America's East Coast. A stoppage would negatively affect many businesses, including retailers such as independent garden centers or manufacturers that depend on the ports to get supplies and products to market.
Previous negotiations broke down when USMX proposed to cap container royalties - payments made to longshoremen based on the weight of the container cargo.
