Harsh winter boosts plant sales in Connecticut

Nurseries, landscapers are gearing up for spring cleanup

This harsh winter wreaked a lot of damage on lawns, plantings and trees and local landscapers and nurseries are gearing up for spring clean up.

Even though he only recently opened his doors, Lee Ganim, co-owner of Ganim’s Garden Center in Fairfield, is already getting inquiries for plantings with color and hardiness that can be placed in the ground now.

“I think people have cabin fever,” Ganim said in a Minuteman News Center story. “We’re getting a lot of calls from people who want color for their beds. This winter was a disaster for plants, shrubs and trees. They’re looking to clean up what they can afford.”

Because of the down economy, Ganim anticipates more people planning “staycations” where they’ll relax around their homes and want to spruce up their yards and landscaping.

Since 1969, Ganim’s has sold nursery products as well as provided landscaping services to area residents. He remains one of the few independently-owned nurseries, and is ironically located down the street from the monster chain Home Depot.

“After forty-two years in the business, we’re one of the last private nurseries left standing,” Ganim said. “We’ve stayed in business because we carry the best products and give expert advice to our customers. They appreciate that.”
