Vegetable gardening is the most popular gardening trend, according to a garden-share.com survey. Data suggests that this is because of a combination of rising gas prices as well as an increase in consumer concern about food origins. John Mitchell, founder of garden-share.com, said having your own garden can be healthy for you and your wallet.
“Vegetable gardening has enjoyed a surge in popularity due to the economy,” Mitchell said. “Add to that the personal satisfaction you get by growing your own food and it is no wonder vegetable gardening is the most popular trend,” he added.
What is consumers’ main reason for gardening? 45.8 percent said relaxation and enjoyment drew them to gardening while 25.8 percent cited beauty and decoration as the reason for their green thumb.
Though technically a fruit, tomatoes are taking over gardens with 56.9 percent of gardeners saying the antioxidant rich item was their favorite vegetable to grow.
