Fire reported at Martin’s Garden Center

UPDATE: Martin’s Garden Center to reopen

Daniel Martin said his family’s business, Martin’s Garden Center, 3278 Birmingham Pike, lost between $50,0000 and $100,000 worth of its inventory Tuesday night when a blaze ripped through its main retail greenhouse and adjacent storage buildings.

Martin said Wednesday afternoon that, despite the loss, the plants and flowers in the numerous greenhouses, along with trees, shrubs and landscaping materials stored outside, were not impacted. Martin hopes to be back in business on Saturday.

“We really appreciate the family and friends that have showed their support,” the 42-year-old Martin said as a small army of people, including fellow church members, worked to clean up debris. “It really means lot.”

Flames ripped through Martin’s Garden Center on Route 453 near Water Street in Huntingdon County on Tuesday night.

Neighbor Ryan Kooken said he was sitting in his home just after 10 p.m. when he heard a loud noise. He looked outside and saw a fully involved fire at the adjacent Martin’s Garden Center.

“The fire seemed to engulf the main indoor retail area of the garden center,” Kooken said, adding the greenhouses surrounding the building were also burning.
