Missouri Botanical Garden begins recycling program May 3
To date more than 850,000 pounds of plastic pots have been saved from the landfill.
Beginning May 3, the Missouri Botanical Garden’s Monsanto Center will recycle plastic garden pots, polystyrene cell packs and trays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The program ends Sept. 30. Ten retail garden centers in the St. Louis region also are accepting plastic pots on behalf of the garden.
“The public interest for recycling garden pots and trays is astonishing,” said program founder Steven Cline, manager of the garden’s William T. Kemper Center for Home Gardening.
Horticultural plastic accepted includes cell packs, trays, pots of all sizes and hanging baskets. Soil, rocks, metal hangers and rings should be removed from the pots. Plastic sheeting is not accepted.
