'Tis the season to go mobile

Shoppers are using their phones for deals this holiday season.

Mobile shopping is on the rise with more than 110 million smartphone users in the U.S. and thousands of free shopping apps available to consumers.

A survey by PriceGrabber.com found that 32 percent of mobile shoppers will download a new shopping app for the holiday season and that 82 percent of consumers that have apps plan to use them to save money on gifts.

The survey, conducted with responses from 2,469 U.S. online shoppers also found that 70 percent of shoppers plan to download coupon apps and 48 percent said they will make fewer trips to retail stores than last year.
Daily deal websites like Groupon and Living Social will be popular this season, with 43 percent of respondents saying they plan to download deal of the day apps.

“Instead of clipping coupons, shoppers are scouring the internet and turning to their mobile devices to find the best deals,” said Rojeh Avanesian, vice president of marketing and analytics of PriceGrabber. “With mobile shopping growing at a rapid rate, it will be interesting to see how retailers will gain the shoppers’ attention in the competitive mobile market space this holiday season.”
