Wednesday's activity at the National Lawn & Garden Show in Colorado Springs continued at a breakneck pace as vendors and buyers hooked up for literally hundreds of appointments. The show concludes Thursday.
Dubbed "the invention show" by one attendee Wednesday, NLGS has introduced a bevy of new products to the industry for the past 16 years. Garden Center magazine has covered the event since its inception, providing product reports for our readers to help them shore up their own buying efforts. Today, we'll look at six birding & nature products that were creating a buzz at the show.
A. The Audubon BirdCam from Wingscapes takes digital photos and videos of backyard wildlife, making it possible to see birds in a new and exciting way. The BirdCam's "Smart Sensor" technology detects animal presence and takes motion-activated photos with fewer empty frames. This innovative camera is weatherproof and simple to use -- downloading and sharing photos and videos is easy.
B. The X-1 Seed Saver feeder from Droll Yankees features a multi-purpose covered dish feeder perfect for attracting birds. The feeder dome and tray are in clear plastic to keep the birds and the seed level visible at all times. The feeder can be mounted on a pole or hung from a brass hanging rod. This feeder features a large, 10-inch adjustable dome that serves to protect the feeder tray from undesired birds and the elements. The dish has a diameter of 7 x 1.75-inches with a 10-inch diameter cover and can accommodate a virtually endless variety of bird foods and can hold up to three quarters of a pound of seed, suet, or table scraps.
C. The Effort-Less Birdfeeder from Zenith Innovation LLC is ideal for wild bird feeding and features a unique, sliding process that makes it extremely easy to use. The feeder slides up and down the center pole eliminating the drudgery associated with re-filling and cleaning a bird feeder. There's no more reaching or bending. It has a squirrel guard and free-standing base.
D. Byer of Maine has introduced the Alcyon birdhouse line. Made of quality, heavy duty porcelain, the Alcyon Bird home features a 1 1/8-inch opening, which is an ideal size for small cavity nesters. The deep egg shaped design offers ample protection from predators, and a small whole in the base of the home provides security from weather conditions. An easily removable screw off cap located on the bottom of the homes allows backyard bird enthusiasts to quickly clean out the empty homes at the end of the season. The Alcyon Feeders come standard with a newly developed forged steel hanging hook that can be used for both hanging on a tree limb, or permanently mounted on a vertical surface.
E. The Snow Man "NO/NO" Feeder is Sweet Corn Products' hottest-selling product. It is hand-crafted and good for all-season use. There is no assembly – your customer just fills its, hangs it and enjoys it. The Snow Man stands 15 inches high, including top hat lid and dispenses black oil sunflower or safflower seed through the all-over metal mesh. This product is designed for the impulse buyer, so the company recommends keeping some near the cash register.
F. The Identiflyer Singing Alarm Clock from For the Birds provides a wakeup call that is a song bird serenade. The clock offers a selection of nine beautiful bird songs from the company's collection. If your customer is not awake when the Meadow Lark sings, she will be when the rooster crows. Set to the hourly mode, the clocks sings a different bird song each hour. A bonus feature of this bird clock is that you can change songs. Insert a different SongCard and you'll have another set of 10 bird songs.
