The Eastpointe City Council on Tuesday night will honor a fourth-generation family-owned garden nursery that recently shut down and sold to another company.
Semrau Garden Center, which opened in 1916 selling vegetables and later adding flowers, operated for 99 years on Gratiot Avenue near Stephens Road and has witnessed the community change names twice during that time period, from Halfway village to East Detroit to Eastpointe.
“They’ve been a true staple of the community for many years,” said Councilman Ronald Laforest.
The business was started by Robert Semrau, who then turned operations over to his son Robert “Bob” Semrau. It most recently was run by his children, Dan Semrau, Jim Semrau and Karen Regan. A fourth generation also helped out during the busiest times.
