Spathoglottis Sorbet series

ForemostCo.’s spathoglottis Sorbet series has flowers that resemble orchids, hence the common name, ground orchids.

Flowers appear from June to September on 18- to 24-inch plants. In warm climates (USDA Hardiness Zones 9-10), Sorbets are great in the landscape. They should be treated as annuals elsewhere, although they can be moved indoors to overwinter as houseplants.

Plants thrive in full sun to partial shade and require moist, well-aerated soil with plenty of organic matter.

Fertilize regularly with a water-soluble or time-release fertilizer. Cut spent flower spikes to keep plants clean. Temperatures above 75°F induce repeat flowering.

The series was evaluated for flower quality, heat resistance, longevity and overall appeal in University of Florida-Gainesville’s 2006 trials. It received a 3.8 rating (out of 5).

There are 10 colors in the series, which includes Moonlit Grape, Coconut Cloud and Tropical Punch.
