Swansons Nursery damaged in electrical fire

A building at the Seattle-based retailer caught fire Aug. 22, temporarily closing that space.

From the Ballard News-Tribune:

A fire broke out at Swansons Nursery in the early morning hours of Monday, Aug. 22, and Seattle firefighters were quick to respond and extinguish the blaze.

According to the Ballard News-Tribune’s news partner, Q-13 Fox, a Seattle Fire Department representative said flames damaged a portion of a greenhouse at the nursery, which is located on the 9700 block of 15th Avenue N.W.

Q-13 reported: “Fire broke through the glass of the greenhouse,” said Deputy Chief Tom Walsh. “It was extinguished pretty quickly. I would say about 15 minutes.”

Aimée Damman, director of marketing & communications for Swansons, said via email that the fire was contained to one area of the garden center, which has multiple structures.

"Luckily, the damage was limited to one building, and we were able to stay open with the exception of our conservatory, which houses the gift shop, café and seminar room," Damman said. "We are now working on assessing, clean-up and repair, and hope to open the building again soon."

Swansons Nursery updated its Facebook page Aug. 22 with the following message:

"Good Morning! As you may have heard, Swansons had a small electrical fire last night. The Cafe & Gift Shop are closed, at least for today. Otherwise we're open. Everyone's okay, including our koi. Temporary restrooms are available. Stay tuned for updates and thank you for all your concern!"

UPDATE: Damman said in an email Sept. 9 that the cafe and gift shop at Swansons Nursery have been re-opened for operation.

"Work on the west side of the building continues (so no seminars or bathrooms yet) but things are proceeding well," she added.
