Walters Gardens releases Designer Hosta line

Walters Gardens’ new Designer Hosta collection markets outstanding cultivars that have been tested by specialty hosta growers across the country.

The 2007 selections include: ‘American Sweetheart,’ ‘Blue Mouse Ears,’ ‘Captain Kirk,’ ‘Dream Weaver,’ ‘Earth Angel,’ ‘Independence’ PP17044, ‘Lakeside Shore Master,’ ‘Old Glory’ PP12503, ‘Praying Hands,’ ‘Rainforest Sunrise,’ ‘Satisfaction’ and ‘Stained Glass.’

Candidates for the program are overwintered for a minimum of two growing seasons. To qualify as a Designer Hosta, plants must have “distinctive” traits such as leaf color, variegation pattern, size, landscape clump form, substance of leaves, texture of leaves, and long-lasting flowers.

Walters Gardens, a liner grower in Zeeland, Mich., looks for other qualities including “exemplary garden performance,” a long season of appeal in the landscape and a greater pest resistance compared to other hostas. The Designer Hosta program is accompanied by specialty tags.
