During the winter holiday season, a familiar topic often re-emerges among retailers and pundits alike: should store employees wish customers "merry Christmas," "happy Hanukkah" or something less specific like "happy holidays?"
Business consultant Bob Phibbs, known as "The Retail Doc," says that although the intention behind the "merry Christmas" greeting is friendly and cheerful, it may have the unwanted side effect of excluding a portion of your customers.
"You want to cater to every customer, those who will buy their presents with cash and those who pay credit, those who can afford the best and those who cannot, those who celebrate Christmas and those who do not," Phibbs says.
